Domaine de Montbourgeau l'Etoile 'Speciale' 2020This elite cuve of Chardonnay is Madame Deriauxs special selection from her best Chardonnay plantings. Like the pure Savagnin cuve, it is left to age for many months (in this instance usually 48 to 60 months) in barrel without racking and without topping off. It is a wine for the ages with a vibrant acidity underlying a dense and concentrated body with notes of beeswax and honey and resin and minerals.

The current disgorgement is based on the 2017 harvest

Medium greenish yellow

which lasts at three years in both 500L “botti” and a variety of larger formats

it displays seashell-like minerality beneath fruit that veers between citrussy and borderline exotic

it shows a satisfying old-vines plumpness beneath its clean

This cuvée spends 12 months in 500-liter barrels between two and eight years of age

with all elements hanging together in delicate harmony

about 10 kilometers northeast of Châteauneuf-du-Pape en route to the Plan de Dieu

and while the components can vary from vintage to vintage

Annual production is in the range of 3000 bottles

allowing for the distinct alpine characteristics to show through
